|Barbara McClennan is a founder member of Riverside Consulting CIC and has spent 40 years working in the private, public and voluntary sectors as a professional in media, PR, education and training. Her first career was spent as a multi-award winning reporter and investigative journalist followed up by time spent as a PR manager, lecturer in journalism in the HE/FE Sector and then as Head of Communications for a Local Authority. Her final major career move was to spend a decade as the Chief Executive of an Education Business Partnership before setting up Two K Communications, her own media/PR company. During this period she has led training and education work with organisations in Poland and Cyprus.
She has an MA in Mass Communications from the University of Leicester, Level 5 NVQs in both Strategic and Operational Management, an HNC in Community Economic Development and is a qualified adult tutor, assessor and moderator in areas including journalism, community development and management. Outside of work she is very active in other areas and this has included time spent representing the small business sector on a consultation group for Oftel (the national regulator for the communications industry now known as Ofcom) as well as being a board member of the Tyne & Wear City Region (now replaced by Local Enterprise partnerships). She is also a Trustee of several local and regional charities.
In addition to this Barbara has been an elected member of Sunderland City Council since 2010 and had developed a particular knowledge and expertise of working with excluded BME groups, minority faith groups and those with homelessness-related issues, including drug and alcohol misuse.
Marie Ashwood works with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service – NHS Scotland.
She is a Community Psychiatric Nurse, a Registered Mental Health Nurse, an EMDR practitioner (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), a Certified Transactional Analyst and a Nurse Independent Prescriber.
She trained as a nurse and as a therapist at University in Edinburgh Scotland and has been a mental health practitioner for over 20 years.
Through Riverside Consulting CIC she presented ADHD training in Shanghai and Xi'an (November 2016), and Shanghai and Qingdao (March 2016). This followed up an earlier independent training visit to Daqing in 2011. She was also a delegate to the International Transactional Analysis conference, San Francisco USA, (2011) and Cologne, Germany (2014). Marie has worked previously as an Acute Mental Health nurse in Mainz, Germany and as a Therapeutic Community volunteer in Santa Cruz, USA.

Wendy Brown is an experienced and qualified careers counsellor who has specialised with individuals facing multiple disadvantages. She has experience of delivering careers services to young offenders in Prison, to unemployed adults and to those at school and college. One of her greatest strengths is the ability to communicate with disengaged individuals and to help them see hope for the future and to set realistic goals towards success.
Wendy has developed a specialism in helping individuals with travel planning to support their life goals – and especially those who previously have found travel to be a major barrier. She leads Riverside Consulting CIC's successful TravelRight* programme which works with Northumberland County Council and local bus companies to help support the sustainable transport responses for local residents.
TravelRight* is a key partner in the County’s “Go Smarter Northumberland” sustainable travel initiative. She has earlier managed a ‘Wheels to Work’ scooter loan programme allowing for supported independent travel for those for whom public transport cannot meet their needs. Wendy was central to the TravelRight* support for NHS staff planning their travel options for re-location to the new Northumberland Specialist and Emergency Care Hospital which opened in June 2015. Riverside Consulting was commissioned by the NHS and by Northumberland County Council to offer this specialist service to help staff plan their new travel journeys.
Wendy is a qualified trainer and internal verifier with experience of delivering training to staff from VCS, public and private sector agencies raising skills in travel planning and employability. She is also an experienced and qualified internal quality auditor being part of an implementation team for the achievement and maintenance of ISO 9000. She is qualified in Business Administration and has led the development of internal systems for the design and recording of project performance and training delivery. She joined Riverside Consulting CIC as an Associate Member in 2013.
Anthony (Tony) House works with the Scottish mental health NGO Penumbra as a Recovery Practitioner where he implements recovery models with 16 to 21 year old clients. He is a Trustee/Manager for the Scottish Borders Post Natal Depression charity where he supports and educates the husbands/ partners of women suffering Post Natal Depression. Previously he worked as a Senior Community Psychiatric Nurse with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service – NHS Scotland.
He is a Registered Mental Health Nurse, holds a Diploma in therapeutic studies of children and young people, is a qualified Cognitive Behaviour Therapist and a Nurse Independent Prescriber.
Tony has been a mental health practitioner for over 31 years. Trough Riverside Condsulting CIC he presented ADHD training in Shanghai and Xi'an (November 2016) and Shanghai and Qingdao (March 2016), following up independent work at Kangning Hospital, Ningbo in 2012. He managed and supervised infant mental health specialist staff for 5 years and took a 2 year part time secondment to youth justice services for mental health.
Tony has a special interest in family therapy and systemic practice.
Iain Kay is a founder member of Riverside Consulting CIC and has been involved in community and economic development and a range of social policy areas for some 25 years.
His first role was working in HR for an enterprise agency before moving on to develop an interest in supporting opportunities for social enterprises. In 1992 he took on a managerial role with Northumbria Probation Service and left in 1995 to set up his own company – Iain W Kay (Consultancy Services) Ltd.
His work since then has focussed on managing programmes to assist the rehabilitation of persistent offenders, to identify ways in which the long term workless can get closer to opportunities for work, to develop effective relationships between schools and local employers through partnerships, to mentoring senior managers and trustees in many social enterprises and third sector organisations and offering a range of support for fundraising activity.
In the last few years he has led the work Riverside Consulting CIC has delivered in France, Poland, China and Bulgaria and explored opportunities in countries such as Germany, Cyprus, Africa and Malta.
In 2014/15 Iain took on a role as a Co-Ordinator of the ESF small grants programme in NE England specialising in assisting groups in Northumberland and Tyne & Wear. The contract was managed by County Durham Community Foundation and was successful in reaching out to 130 small groups across the region.
In 2015/16 he is working on a partnership programme with the city of Valletta, Malta funded through Erasmus+. This programme will see young amateur sports people from Malta visiting Sunderland to learn from experts at the Foundation of Light and the Sunderland AFC Academy. A group from Sunderland will also go to Malta and learn about culture and history from the European Capital of Culture 2018 host city.
Currently he is an External Assessor for the Erasmus European trans-national programmes, assessing and making funding recommendations for projects addressing vocational education and training for adults.
Iain is a full member of the Institute of Fundraising and has a range of qualifications in assessing and moderating adult learning in areas such as community development, business management and enterprise. He has an MSc in Systemic Organisation & Management from the University of Sunderland.
Outside interests over the years have included being a non-executive director of Newcastle Airport, a governor of various local schools, serving on panels for the Independent Tribunal Service. Iain is also a Trustee of Community IT Academy and he takes an active interest in local and national politics. He is also an elected member of Sunderland City Council, was first elected in 1988 and in 2012/13 was the Mayor of the City.

Jeffrey Warren is a Director of Ferngarth Ltd and brings substantial experience of Policy, Operations and Business Development within Criminal Justice, Training and Employability.
He is an accomplished bid writer and tender manager and is a consultant to national tender companies. He has written tenders for the NHS, Local Authorities, Police, DWP, SFA, Lottery, EU and multi-national private sector companies.
Jeff joined Riverside Consulting CIC in 2011. He sits on the Board of the Blyth Valley Resource Initiative focusing his attention upon business development strategies. He leads Riverside’s work on the TravelRight* transport programme.
He has a strong background in business development and growth with VCS agencies, Colleges, Public and Private Sector organisations and has written bids for national and international Prime Contractors. Jeffrey has been a Lottery and an ESF Assessor and undertaken research and evaluation programmes for Local Authorities, Business Link and Colleges. Currently he is an External Assessor for the Erasmus European trans-national programmes, assessing and making funding recommendations for projects addressing vocational education and training and for Youth projects.
He has expertise with offender resettlement having been a Senior Manager with Probation, NACRO and A4e developing services for offenders in the community and in Prison. Jeffrey established the Careers Information and Advice Service in the North East regional Prisons. He represented national Probation on the European Offender Employment Forum.
Jeffrey has experience of implementing ISO9001, in leading Matrix accreditation and leading Ofsted/ALI Inspections. He holds a BSc, a PGCE, an External Verifier Award and is a qualified trainer in Psychometric testing. He is a Member of the Institute for Learning, the Guild of Bid Writers, the Association for Proposal Management Professionals and is currently completing an EDMS in Strategic Management.
